Marianne is one of the national emblems of France, representing the state, the spirit of the revolution, liberty and, thanks to the Enlightenment, reason. She appears on stamps and is even on the “logo” of the French republic.

Anyway, never mind that. The second round of elections is coming this weekend [with a close win for Hollande predicted] and some posters have started appearing, showing photographs of women from modern France as Marianne. And here you go.
The idea of the state and national identity in France is one that many books have been written about and I’m somewhat nervous about tackling just yet!
